Report from Alma, NM Tractor Ride & Campout:  July 20th – 22nd (Friday – Sunday) Floyde

  1. Awesome - A Note from Floyde Adams: Well, the first annual Alma Tractor Drive/Get Together has come and gone. What a nice 2+ days it was. Sure would hate to have missed it. Others will give the statistics of how many and how much, etc. I will try to give some idea of how good.

The success is due in large part to the hard work and preparation by Jay & Eileen McKeen, Henry and Nita Imel and Harry and Karen Mikel. The McKeens were very excellent and gracious hosts at their RV park east of Alma. Don't know where Alma is? About 3 miles or so north of Glenwood on US 180. Henry and Nita made 5 round trips from LC to Alma to get stuff up there and back! Wow, talk about commitment. One trip up was to take the parade wagon. Good thing we had it because it carried about 20 folks on both drives.

Both drives you ask? Friday evening we drove several miles up the canyon from the RV park and the McKeen ranch to the end of the road. The Gila mountains at sunset were simply breathtaking in their beauty. Only in NM can one see such sights. That evening we had hamburgers, hot dogs and other good stuff cooked courtesy of the Mikels. Connie made chocolate-peanut butter ice cream that night. All of this took place under a nice pavilion Jay built for the RV park.

The next morning Jay and Harry cooked breakfast for all with other pitching in to help. After breakfast, we all loaded up for the drive to Mogollon. Let me say this: it is all up hill! Wonderful experience! Those who couldn't make it really missed a beautiful drive. There were about a dozen tractors including the parade wagon leading the way. The last 5 miles is not only a very steep uphill grade but a one lane paved(?) road. Meeting another vehicle was, shall we say, interesting. Jay pulled the wagon with his big tractor...needed it for that work. All the tractors made except one. We picked it up on the way back down. All in all we were gone about 7 hours including a lunch stop in the "Purple Onion" in Mogollon. Good! Good! Good!

In the afternoon before dinner, we had a bunch of games/contests with tractors that were very fun to watch. Slow races both forward and reverse. Guess what? Different tractors won. Pushing a barrel with the front tires of the tractor was a barrel of fun. They also drove through a pylon maze with the driver blinded by a towel over his/her head with a passenger giving the driver instructions. Hilarious!

That evening we had as good a barbecue as this writer has ever eaten in his life. Jay is an expert at it and has several large barbecue smokers/cookers there. He prepared 4 large briskets in his Cookshack commercial cooker. He cooked it 12 hours! It was so good that I came home and immediately ordered a Cookshack smoker for Connie and me. I am going to tell you folks that was some kind of barbecue. I think there were other things that went with the meal but I don't remember...just the meat. That night Connie made fresh strawberry ice cream.

The next morning we all rode the wagon into Alma for breakfast at the local cafe.

Considering the distance, I think we had an excellent turnout. There were about 7 or 8 folks from Wilcox, AZ.

I, for one, sincerely hope that we make this an annual event. Jay says there are even better places to drive our tractors in the area. I am sure looking forward to that. This outing was as close to an old-fashioned get together as we are likely to have.

    Respectfully submitted,
    Floyde Adams

  • Report from Last Meeting & The Southern NM State Fair:
    • The last meeting was an Ice Cream & Goodie Party at Fred Horner’s home. If you were not there, WE MISSED YOU and you missed a good time.
    • Fred said: “Thanks to all who brought goodies, helped with the festivities and came out.”
    • From NMVI: “Thanks Freddie for hosting us and letting us admire your “new” Model T.
    • To help fund some of the fair activities, there were two banners in the tractor display and pull area with sponsors names listed. For a $100 donation a sponsor had their name on a banner. Some sponsors donated services or merchandise. Hill Equipment donated a Case IH with a bucket to keep the track “dressed.” Plains Implement donated a pedal tractor (see more info below.)
    • To improve name recognition, the club had flag/banners made to carry on vehicles in parades. They look great and were a big hit at the fair. They are available for all to use. If anyone would like to by one of their own, contact Jay McKeen or Henry Imel.
    • Sue Deerman took orders for oxford, polo, and tee shirts with an NMVI logo on them. They looked really sharp at the Fair. The cooks also had NMVI aprons to protect their new shirts
    • To improve public relations and recruit new members, brochures have been designed and printed. Some were handed out at the fair to prospective members and were used to take to businesses to enlist sponsors.
    • The refurbished sled received many complements at the fair. Unfortunately there was not enough time to get it painted before the fair. Floyd Adams has some special acrylic enamel paint which he will provide to the club at a substantial discount when enough painters can be recruited.
    • There will be no advertising painted on the sled. All advertising will be on banners.
    • JD Pedal Tractor
    • Donation tickets were sold for a chance to win a pedal John Deere 5020 Tractor which had been donated by your John Deere dealer – South Plains Implement. This project made $700.
